Do Good

By Alicia Moss

Have you ever thought, I wish I could serve the Lord better?

Or, I wish I could sing better, have a greater prayer life, or be closer to the Lord? Sometimes, we want to rate our service to the Lord. “I made a 100 percent today because I…” or “Man, I’m a failure today because…”

Many times as Christians we see the great giants of the faith, and we want to serve the Lord in the same capacity. How did the great giants of the faith become great? What is one small thing we can do to serve God greater? Do GOOD!

Galatians 6:10, “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

The word “good” in this verse means “benefit” or “well.”

How is our service to the Lord benefiting all men? How is our politeness? How are our manners in secular locations? Are we doing good to the waitress that just can’t seem to get the drink order right?

The end of the verse states, “especially unto them who are of the household of faith.” How are we benefiting our Christian brothers and sisters in Christ? Are we looking for opportunities to serve our Christian family? Is there a widow who needs a ride to church? Is there someone who needs a home-cooked meal or a Doordash meal? Are we looking for opportunities to do good?

I am guilty of having a one-tracked mind of “xyz” must be done today and forgetting to look for the opportunities of doing good to all men. Should I be good to the leaders in my church? Sure, but what about the teenager that is looking for answers. How can I find an opportunity to do good? What about the widower that could use a smile of encouragement?

Acts 10:38, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.”

GOOD = philanthropic = seeking to promote the welfare of others

Paul instructed us to do good in Galations, but even Christ modeled doing good in Acts. As Peter preached about Jesus in Acts 10, he listed Christ doing good with being anointed and healing the oppressed. Wow, who would have thought doing good would equal healing the oppressed. We can’t heal the oppressed, but we can do GOOD!

I challenge us to be aware of the opportunities to do good to all men. Ask God to allow you to see how you can do good to all men. Can the time God has given be shared? Can the money God has blessed you with be given?

What talent do you have that can benefit someone?:

-a poem

-a crocheted pot holder

-a pot of soup

-a prayer

-a loaf of sour dough bread.

-an encouraging note

Look for the opportunities to do GOOD!
